Water Baptism Is For Every Believer
The first sermon instructs every believer to be baptized in water.
"And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." ~ Acts 2:38
Baptism symbolizes our spiritual death, burial & resurrection in Christ.
"Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life." ~ Romans 6:3-4
The word baptize means "dip" or "submerge"; lots of water is needed.
"And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him." ~ Acts 8:38.
"John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim, because water was plentiful there, and people were coming and being baptized." ~ John 3:23
Founders of denominations agree:
Martin Luther "Iwouldhavethose who are to be baptized entirely immersed,as the work imports & the mystery signifies."
John Calvin "... 'baptize' signifies to immerse. It is certain that immersion was the practice of the ancient church."
John Wesley "Buried with Him, alludes to baptizing by immersion according to the custom of the first church."
Jesus tells us to baptize his followers. It's a step of obedience to Jesus.
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" ~ Matthew 28:19
Water baptism is symbolic and does not save. Only God's grace saves.
"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast." ~ Ephesians 2:8-9
Christians are to emulate Jesus. Jesus was baptized.
"And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him" ~ Matthew 3:16
Baptism should happen as soon as possible.
"So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls." ~ Acts 2:41
