At Destination Church our passion is to build communities that are loyal to Jesus. A big part of seeing this come to life is through our small groups. We want to see our small groups help people learn more about God and grow in relationship with Him. No matter what you know about God today, He is calling you into a deeper relationship with Him.

A key ingredient to learning more about God is by authentically seeking Him. Destination Church doesn’t hold small groups to merely re-confirm everything a person already knows about God. We hold small groups to create an environment of learning and authentic seeking. You don’t need to know anything to join a small group. You simply have to have a desire to know God more.

In Matthew 7 Jesus speaks to a crowd and says, “ Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

Jesus is saying if you want to learn about God you must seek God. And if you seek God, He will reveal Himself to you. Conversely, you cannot discover something unless you seek it.

Joining a small group is a commitment to learn and a commitment to others. Through your small group you will build relationships with others and together discover God’s truths. It is an opportunity you don’t get everyday. It can even help you discover God’s plan for your life. What are you waiting for?

It’s easy to complain about things in life and then take ZERO action to change those things. Many have developed the habit of wanting and talking about change, but never actively defining what action steps they need to take in order to experience a change. We all need adjustments, no matter what stage of life, and we all need clarity on what our next steps should be.

There is an easy yet profound step you can take today to initiate significant growth in your life. The simple step of joining a Destination Small Group can be applied to anyone experiencing the following …

You have experienced a change in your life and need new structure and consistency.

You are struggling in your personal life somehow and feel stuck.

You don’t know where you stand with God and you want to learn more.

You are aware of the need to be around others who believe what you believe.

You need to be around people who will be a positive influence on you.

You are a Christian who hasn’t spent much discipleship time with other Christians recently or ever.

You want to learn more about the Bible but have a hard time doing this by yourself.

You have a passion to see others grow in their relationship with God.

You want to find an opportunity to serve and lead others.

Anyone with even a nugget of interest in spiritual growth should check out a Destination Small Group this semester. Sometimes people are concerned about joining a group with people they wont like or wont accept them. This fear is understandable but unfounded. It’s good for us to be around people unlike us, it’s part of maturing and learning to love people we don’t naturally “get”. In a group of over twelve people there will always be one or two who we can form a more natural connection with. Give it time and some encouraging connections will form.

We are currently offering six groups on various topics. Signing up is easy and joining a new group puts everyone on the same level so there is no need to fear being seen as a newbie. Destination Small Groups are a great way to grow spiritually and make connections. Don’t miss this chance to go a little deeper and accelerate your own growth.

Check out which group best suits you.

Small Groups are a great way to make connections and grow spiritually. We have Wednesday and Thursday night groups that will focus on personal finances and take a Biblical approach towards growing in financial stewardship.

We also have Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday groups that will focus on how Gods truth gets twisted in our minds and how we can respond with spiritual warfare.

I want to encourage you to sign up on our web site today and get involved. Groups last for only 13 weeks and will be a huge blessing to you. With about a week and a half to go before Small Groups start don’t miss your chance to get involved before groups close.

At Destination Church Chicago our Fall Small Groups are taking 9 weeks to study the book Undefiled by Harry Schaumburg which is about sexual redemption.

We’ve bought a copy for everyone who visits the church during the YOU, SEX & GOD teaching series. Please come visit and pick up your copy this Sunday.

This book takes us through the story of a married couple who found themselves on the verge of divorce because of sexual sin. We see their journey towards sexual redemption and along the way dig deep into the root issues we all face.

Many singles, married couples not struggling with issues (rare, but amazing) and others will ask I don’t get it, what on earth will I get out of this book? How does it relate to me?

Let me respond with a list of 9 reasons why you can’t afford not to read this book in a Destination small group:

OTHERS: Most people you know will get married or are married. Most will face any number of sexual issues. You can be a great source of encouragement and support to them through studying this book. You can become relate-able at the very least or, the source of accountability and transformation at the very best.

IDENTITY: You are a sexual being. No matter what stage of life you are in, sex affects you RIGHT NOW. Most Christians have not dug deep into the theology of sexual identity. Studying the truth of what God says about your sexuality is critical for everyone.

MARRIAGE: Other than believing in Jesus, the most important decision you will make, that will define the rest of your life, is the person you marry. Most people get married. Most get married with false expectations and sexual issues. Undefiled will give you a frame work to start dealing with these issues ahead of time and graciously understand them in your spouse.

DIVORCE: With somewhere between 40-50% of marriages ending in divorce and 60% of second time marriages ending in divorce, the church must start getting this right. We are too quick to bail on a difficult relationship. Undefiled will help you understand Gods expectation of you in your present or future marriage.

TRUTH: A lot of Christian material on this subject focuses on behavior modification, techniques for trying harder. Undefiled stands apart from the crowd because it goes for the root issues of truth and identity. Lasting transformation doesn’t happen simply through trying harder or behavioral adjustments, but through knowing God and what he says.

GENDER: Our culture, and our Christian culture, is very confused about gender differentiation. The Bible has much to say about this subject which actually makes sense of the world around us and helps us grasp the complexities of both genders.

TEMPTATION: Pornography, masturbation, sexting, hooking up or extra-martial relationships are unfortunately common place. It is virtually impossible to go one day without consuming some form of sexual content. Sexual temptation is more powerful, more available, more normal and more damaging than ever before. Men, if you are unaware of the sexual trials and struggles of women you will make rubbish husbands. Women, if you are unaware of the difficulties that your husbands face you will make rubbish wives. We have to be real about this issues now, not after marriage, or if problems arise, NOW.

SEX: We want everyone at Destination who isn’t blessed with celibacy to have the best marriage possible. One thing this means is having great sex in your marriage. If you want to truly experience the depths of sexual passion as God intended them you will need to face your own sin and develop grace for your spouses sin. Undefiled will set you in this direction.

VISION: Our passion is to build communities (of AWESOME marriages) that are loyal to Jesus!

Come during our YOU, SEX & GOD series and get your free book.

Community formation never just happens accidentally.

Both take time and intentionality. Both are essential for healthiness and happen best together. There is nothing more powerful, and more necessary, than communal spiritual advance and development.

The Bible is clear on the matter. 1 Corinthians 12:26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. The connectivity we share brings us stability through our highs and lows.

What is the contrast? A person who keeps to themselves, who lives independently and never allows themselves to be inconvenienced or challenged by others, is more likely to suffer from depression, sickness and be financially unstable. What right minded person would chose this?

You want to grow spiritually? You want to get connected? Take 30 seconds and make a simple decision today.

Sign up NOW for the fall semester of small groups at Destination Church.
