Determination 101

Have you ever felt there’s more to life than what you’re living? We’re not meant to live mediocre lives, but on some level we all struggle with being underwhelming and feeling inconsequential. But here’s the problem: On our own, we don’t really know how to break out of ruts. We don’t really know how to do more than “just get by.”

There’s a tendency to not make any changes, and dissatisfaction remains. Why do reasonable people think that doing the same things over and over will result in anything different? In fact, that’s one definition for insanity! The God of the Bible has more for us than just living an ordinary, run-of-the-mill life!

In Proverbs 13:4, God gives us a warning and a promise. He says, “The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.” In other words, God is the source of the extraordinary life we desire. Learn how to prioritize, gain focus, and live the disciplined life that God wants us to live.

A Child Is Born

You are invited to Destination’s 2011 Christmas series: A CHILD IS BORN. Please join us for this two part series on December 11 & 18. Note that we are celebrating Christmas during this two week series and will not have a Christmas eve or day service.

We also have a special Baby Dedication during the December 11 service. This dedication is for parents that are regular attenders (attended 3 or more times) or members with children under 2 years old. The dedication will take place during our regular Sunday service and consist of a special time of prayer for each child. Dedication is a decision for each parent to entrust their child’s future to the Lord and pray over them for Gods blessing.

Please sign up each child you wish to dedicate (email subscribers click here). Parents will need to write a short prayer of dedication in order to participate. This is a great opportunity to invite friends and family to celebrate together. Sign up with this form.

Adventure: Pursuing Hazardous Action

We are looking at how our faith intersects with environmental stewardship and what the Bible teaches us about creation care.

To calculate velocity you need to combine speed with direction. This measurement is not just about acceleration, but overall aim. Welcome to Spiritual Velocity, Destinations new Sunday teaching series starting February 27.

It’s easy to look at people with spiritual speed and start to feel inferior. Or, to look at those who have a crystal clear calling and feel inadequate. But what if those things aren’t connected properly in our lives? If one is just slightly off we can lose sight of the big picture and our velocity negatively changes. How do we measure our spiritual velocity and train ourselves to move forward at the correct pace and at the correct target?

All Consuming

How much money did you spend over the Holidays? Can you pay off your credit card in January? Are you effectively stewarding the resources at your disposal? Those questions might hurt a little, but they are important considerations, especially at the start of the year.

The good news is that on January 30th Destination Church starts a 4 week teaching series called Financial Resolution. We’ll be tackling all kinds of topics related to money. Specifically we’ll discuss consumerism and how to cultivate contentment in our every day lives. Along this line I wanted to share a powerful article with you which appears in our current global Newfrontiers publication. Destination is a part of a worldwide family of churches called Newfrontiers and our global magazine is an enormously helpful resource.

Destination Church Chicago is taking a break for Christmas (no gathering Dec 26). But, we are coming back strong on January 2 with a three part teaching series titled Be Purposeful, where we’ll reveal the single most important new years resolution and how to keep it.

The start of the year is a significant time to refocus. I want to challenge you to start 2011 off on the right foot and make a commitment to attend all three Be Purposeful Sundays. Rediscover your purpose in 2011 with three critical topics that will train you, envision you and motivate you to go deeper than ever before.
